Mission team news

Belize Mission Team 1:  June 21 - 27, 2008

Saturday:  Everyone got  to Belize OK...after  a 1 1/2 hour delay in Miami due to a light bulb being out somewhere on the plane.  Here are some pictures of their arrival at the San Ignacio Hotel.

Sunday... the team traveled to Caracol to see the Mayan ruins.  They have uncovered 3500 structures (which they think is only 10%).  While at the ruins, the team held a short worship service in the rainforest, complete with communion.  They were given a great surprise when viewing the tallest temple... a Howler monkey was there.  The team got to within 15 feet of it.  Howler monkeys are usually heard and very seldom seen...so this was definitely a treat!  After Caracol, the team went to Rio Pools and enjoyed relaxing in the river, splashing in the pools and sliding down solid granite rocks like water slides.

Monday... was our first day at Billy White and as usual with mission work, we waited until 1:00 for the supplies to arrive that were scheduled for 9:00.  But while waiting, the team painted the inside of the Community Center in preparation of Tuesday’s graduation ceremony.  Everyone enjoyed time with the children. Many of us handed out stickers to the kids, who in return put stickers on us.  Allan LaCoe went around all day with a smiley face sticker stuck in the middle of his glasses.  Gloria, Joyce and Kathy held a half day VBS for the children.  They enjoyed singing songs while Gloria played her flute.  When the supplies arrived, construction began on the ceiling of the classroom addition which we have been working on for the past year.  That evening, many enjoyed walking down to the main street of San Ignacio and doing some shopping.

Tuesday... found the team working hard on the ceiling still.  They have to prepare it for the Celetex to be nailed up.  Some were also preparing the window spaces for the new shutters (they don't use glass windows, just shutters).  VBS was a lot of fun again. The children made bracelets with their names from foam beads and embroidery floss.  Joyce told the group a story and once again Gloria entertained them with her flute.  There was a lot of rain today, but we managed to work inside.  This afternoon was graduation for five students from primary school.  Four of the five students have been accepted into secondary school and ROWKIDS (John and Sue Eve's foundation) is sponsoring them for the school year.

Wednesday was the end-of-school party.  The children were treated to a piñata full of candy andprizes; a special lunch furnished by ROWKIDS; more stickers and balloon animals.  Work continued on the ceiling; a group painted one of the teacher's houses; work was completed on the outdoor shower for the teachers; the young people built a pathway between the school and the community center and one between the teachers' houses and the school building.  Once again, it poured down rain but it did not stop the work crews and it did not stop the football (soccer) game.  The children, all, loved the back packs full of school supplies which were donated by the members of St. Andrew.  One young man wanted a special thank-you written to the children of our church:

Children of St. Andrew,
I got marvelous things in my bag...it was very nice of the children of your church to do such a nice thing for us.  It will help me start school next year.  I want to thank all of you.     Adriel Mendoza

Thursday began with a tearful "see you later" to Debby from the team...Debby left early in order to be at worship service on Sunday to play the organ for the 40th anniversary celebration.  Work continued on the electric and plumbing, the doors and shutters were began, the ceiling was finally finished and the first coat of paint put on it.  Allan LaCoe and crew replaced the sill on the rear of one of the teachers' houses and a final coat of paint was put on, VBS was creating bookmarks for the children back at St. Andrew and more fun with stickers.

Friday was only a partial day of work...the ceiling fans were installed, the doors and shutters were hung and the locking hardware put into place.  Games were played with the children and all too soon "goodbyes" had to be said.  The route taken back to San Ignacio was different today...we went across the river on a "man-powered" ferry instead of taking the bridge.  Of course, the ferry crew was more than glad to allow some of us to do the hard work of cranking the ferry across the river.  At devotions, this evening, John said, "Back in September, when we started planning for this trip, I told all of you that a little spark had been ignited in your hearts...after this week, I see a bonfire in your hearts...I hope that when you return home, you don't let the world put that fire out!"

Saturday was the day for goodbyes from the Adult group and hellos from the Young Family group.  After much worries and projected delays with the group returning home, it all was for naught.  The Adult group flew out of Belize on time, made their connection in Miami and were in Savannah before midnight.  The only problem was their cars were in Jacksonville...the drivers of the vehicles rented a van and drove down to pick-up the cars and the others took a shuttle home to Hilton Head.

Mission Team 2:  June 29 - July 5
The Young Family group arrived and got through customs with very little difficulty...arriving at the hotel early evening.  After an early dinner, short information meeting...it was off to bed for most because it had been a long day.  Saturday – The Young Family team is joined this week by a team of 8 from Trinity UMC (Chris Martin’s dad’s church in Florida).

Sunday was fun day.  Trip to Caracol and Rio on the Pools.

Monday was the Young Family group’s first interaction with the kids of Billy White.  Because the kids were already out of school, attendance was low in the morning, but word quickly spread throughout the village that the team was at the school.  The ladies of the group conducted VBS for 3 different age groups.  The new classroom was painted a cheery yellow, the outside of the classroom was painted to match the rest of the school, work continued on the window and door openings.

Tuesday surprised the team with a medical mission group from Ohio State University in the Billy White community center.  Scott Cummings felt that this was a God moment because he and Wendy have been struggling with the idea of a medical mission group…now he knows that it is meant to happen in the near future. Tuesday was also enjoyed by the team as they toured the Iguana Preserve here at the hotel.  They have had 186 births since the 2 teams have been here.  The tour also included John Chuc telling the group about the Medicinal Trail and how the local plants are used…he is very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of Belize because he has studied under a Mayan Sharma.  John Chuc is very proud of his Mayan heritage and is a fountain of knowledge.

Watch for final Mission trip photos and postings the week of July 7... and in worship on July 20.
